Negative Illistration
My piece is made with colored pencils, black charcoal pencil, and a white paint pen. My goal was to make the dark black n white woman the vocal point. I wanted the bright saturated colors to be the background, to swarm the woman, making the dark negative figure pop out. My inspiration, Michelangelo's Sculpture Night, is a beautiful rendition of female anatomy. I wanted to enhance said anatomy with dark black n white shading, enhancing the feminin curves of the woman with shaded black. My piece is far from realistic, is a lot more cartoonish. Why i chose this piece as the Negative rendition of the project is because i wanted the main thing to see something negative, which is represented by the woman made of dark black shades. Although the piece's vocal point is one of solemn attributes, one can still be surrounded by brightness.
Inspiration
- Night (Notte) by Michelangelo was my inspiration for this peice. I just took the basic anatomy/pose of the woman and placed it into my drawing. I've always adored Michelangelo's works, wether it be paintings or sculptures like Night. “What can I say of the ‘Night’…? Who has ever seen a sculpture of any period, ancient or modern, to compare with this? For in her may be seen not only the stillness of one who is sleeping but also the grief and melancholy of one who has lost something great and noble…” Giorgio Vasari, Life of Michelangelo. This quote explains what i feel about this piece in a whole. Just like in my piece, i made the brests very detailed and very noticeable. Although i do not share the same background or overall message as Michelangelo's Night, I made it my own in the way of the positive and negative conotations.
Process
- The first photo is just a sketch of the body. A very loose sketch. There is no experimentation of the shading and actual features yet, but it helped me be able to actually find a basic form of where everything is.
- The second photo was me finally getting to the shading and mapping out the details. Focusing more on the facial, Brest, and torso details.
- The third is a less saturated version of my illustration. Only lightly pressing on the pencil and using minimal lighting to enhance the photos final take.
ACT
- Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your work I used the reference of the pose Night is in and adapted it into my own cartoonish anatomy style piece. The cause of my piece was the overall figure of Night, and the effect was me putting it onto paper and effectively stylizing it.
- What is the overall approach(point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration? The overall research i did of the piece is just the background and the possible inspirations behind it. I dont pay much attention to most of the research unless it directly affects my peace.
- What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration? The thing i discovered most about researching Michelangelo is his unique style of anatomy.
- What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? The anatomy and overall figure of the statues.
- What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? That there is many things that can go into creating the meaning of ones pose and the execution's of ones work.
