Style Adaption
Exobition
I used old drawings that I worked on in the past to create now adaptations of my new style. The reason I did this is because i wanted to see how far i have became since trying out different styles. My piece are two "Adds" for a fictional comic I've created called the MoonRise Universe. This is actually a project I have been working on for years and only recently have decided to fully sit down and work on it officially to one day release. I took inspiration from comics and manga in specific for the art style. It is a very simplistic stylized artwork that I'm particularly proud of when it comes to the colors. Each color pops uniquely and the bold of the black makes it pop even more. The over all approach i wanted to go for in this piece is staying true to my own personal style and preferred medium. The colors where all up to me in the end, eventually going with more brighter simplistic choices along with focusing on how the bold black brings the piece together.
Progress
These are the original layers of the Old drawings
These are the original drawings. As you can see they are much duller than the new adapted ones. The colors are not blended.
This is the first drawing of the piece i did a very long time ago when i was first experimenting with the style choice. the colors are dull, and not blended. The lines are thin and not as bold as the further drawings.
|
I began by drawing over the old drawing. Bolding the lines.
|
I put down the base colors. Specifically in the hair, the dark medium and lightest shade is all mapped out so I can later blend it together. This is done repeatedly in the coloring processes.
|
This is the hair and the skin entirely blended out. I made the skin the most detailed part of the piece.
|
The only thing I did differently in this progress was that i started off the paining of the skin in Black n White to highlight where all the highlights and dark shadings will be. A experiment of a sort. I then used the Clipping Mask tool to color over all of the grey scale to make it skin tone. An easy way to change the color without redoing it.

Inspiration Hirohiko Araki
Hirohiko Araki is one of the most influential Japanese Artists when it comes to Manga and art in general. Araki was heavily inspired by classical techniques in paintings and sculptures. Also finding a lot of his inspiration from Paul Gaugin. His style adapted throughout the years, and the style i chose to adapt into my own was his ability to give his characters a sharper appearance. Reminding me of characters one would see in Comic books. His style consists of structure, contouring and detail, uniquely defining the characters through thick angular lines and dynamic clothing.
Compare Contrast
Contrast
-My peice is a digital drawing while Araki's is a painting
-The color choises are different. My colors are blended together while Arakis are more saturated and less blended to make the shading stick out.
-I have harsh line art while Araki's blends into the colors
-
Compare
-They are both created by preferred stylistic choices. Araki is known for his style when it comes to painting and I'm developing mine
-Saturated colors when it comes to highlights or extra detailing.
-the lips are very bold and stick out

ACT
- Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your work? I used old drawings that I worked on in the past to create now adaptations of my new style. The reason I did this is because i wanted to see how far i have became since trying out different styles.
- What is the overall approach(point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration? The over all approach i wanted to go for in this piece is staying true to my own personal style and preferred medium. The colors where all up to me in the end, eventually going with more brighter simplistic choices along with focusing on how the bold black brings the piece together.
- What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration? That being true to ones personal style and medium choice can create more of a creative boost than being refined to a project that is told to be created. Seeing how one can grow from old drawings to new readapted ones.
- What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? The color choices and how to stylistically put that into play, staying true to my realistic, cartoon like approach to the reference.
- What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research? That there is many things that can go into creating the meaning and the execution's of ones work.
